The most sucessful links are those on sites that you are a member and well known. So including your link as a signature in forums that you frequent and asking for a link exchange there seems to work well.

Otherwise, I'd email site owners with a similar but non competing niche and ask. Most people would see that as a compliment and be only to glad to exchange.
