Are Meta Tags important?

Since it seems that google does not consider meta tags while crawling at all, i am wondering whether meta tags are all that important to traffic or what. i would like to hear from the experts at seo on this issue?

Meta tags are still important. Search engines - even Google - still use them to identify and categorize a site.

Search engines are just so advance now that if sites don't have meta tags, they can still categorize them, but it's best to categorize and optimize your site yourself the best you can through its meta tags.

For the time it takes to do them, I'd still do them. It seems worthwhile to me to make every effort where your site is concerned.

I agree with the above two posters. While an older style of SEO, everything counts unless you are in a very distinct niche.

Meta tags are important, they are keywords that people would use to find any website in Google or any other search engine. Meta tags tell about any web page. It describes the web page so with the quality content.
